When she was only two months old, her family relocated to England and stayed there for four years. She spent the following five years in Oklahoma as well as West Texas, before moving to Sugar Land, Texas. The Fort Bend Community Theatre, she began acting lessons in the age of 10. Tolman was recognized for her role as Minnesota Police Officer Molly Solverson. Vanity Fair wrote that Tolman "calmly took over" the show. Tolman was awarded the Critics' Choice Television Award as Best Supporting Actress for a Movie/Miniseries, and was also nominated for Best Actress at both the Emmy Awards & Golden Globes for her performance. It was also in the same year that it was announced that Tolman is scheduled to make a guest appearance on The Mindy project in the role of Abby Berman who is a romance writer. In 2015, she played the role of a support on Michael Dougherty s comedy horror film Krampus. Tolman has an iconic performance in Fargo and Fargo, opted out of support roles in the film as wives, mothers, and the best friends in order to take on a role that was more distinctive. Tolman had a role on ABC on Downward Dog (based on Animal Media Group's web-series). The series was canceled after just one season. Tolman played in ABC's Emergence drama that debuted on 24 September 2019 but was cancelled by ABC within a year, on 21 May 2020, even though Tolman tweeting she thought the ratings were "pretty good". The actress was a guest on NBC's Good Girls. She appeared as Alma Filcott during the second season of Why Women Kill.
